Today is Sunday June 5. It is the last Sunday of this school
year. This past week has been a series of lasts for the students.
As I mentioned in yesterday’s post, it doesn’t feel like the end
of the year should be so close. Normally I would be spending time today going
over my lesson plans for the coming week, reviewing what materials I was going
to use, ensuring the video segments I planned to show were cued up on my
playlist, and mentally preparing myself for presenting the lessons. Today I
have to do none of that. I only have to mentally prepare myself to sit through
the awards ceremony and not think about how this may be my last close contact
with some of these kids I’ve seen on a daily basis for not one, but two, school
years.
I began this article this morning and soon realized I was
getting too maudlin about school ending soon. So I put it aside to return to it
now in the late evening hours. As this day went on and I began thinking about
all the activities I have planned for this summer, I did begin looking forward
to Summer Break.
The first thing I’m looking forward to is school related. The
awards ceremony tomorrow is going to have a few surprises for a few of my
students who probably cannot imagine they are going to be recognized. I can
hardly wait to see the looks on their faces when their names are announced.
The second thing I’m looking forward to is also school related,
the issuance of the final report cards on Tuesday. The issuance of the final
report cards is when the students officially find out whether or not they’ve
been promoted to the eighth grade. A very few of mine will learn they’ve been “transferred”
to the eighth grade rather than promoted. Being transferred rather than
promoted indicates the student failed one of their core courses. Failing one
course is not enough to cause retention.
The third thing I’m looking forward to is school related but not
student related, directly anyway. On Wednesday I have a meeting scheduled with
my Principal during which I should find out what my assignment will be next
year. I have no idea what she has in mind for me, but I’m game for anything.
The rest of this coming week is full of teacher workdays. Then
Friday, about three, summer break begins. Well, it begins as long as I don’t
have anything extra to do regarding what my assignment is for next year. Only
time will tell about that. Until then…
As Always, I Remain,
The Exhausted Educator
