We are quite literally having a hot time in the school this
morning. At some point over the weekend the thunderstorms took out the air
conditioning system in our building and it has not been repaired as yet. We
were greeted with indoor air that was warmer and more humid than the air
outside.
Having an indoor temperature of nearly 80°(F) is a very
uncomfortable way to spend the last full day of school this school year. Later
this morning we will be having our Awards Ceremony in the Gymnasium. I haven’t
heard yet as to whether the Gym’s air conditioning is working or not. If it is
not working, we are going to have one very hot and unpleasant ceremony.
Several of my home room students did not come to school today. I
imagine this rash of absenteeism is the same throughout the school. Considering
there are only one-and-a-half days left of school, some parents allow their
students to start their summer vacation early. I’ve always found it interesting
that, for the most part, it is the well behaved students who wind up being
allowed to stay home and the ill-behaved students who come right up to the last
day and don’t go home until the final busses roll out of the school parking
lot.
There was one pleasant surprise this morning. Unbeknownst to me,
several of the young ladies in my home room had decided to dress up for the Awards
Ceremony and came to school in dresses this morning. They looked quite nice all
dressed up. For some of them, it was the first time they’d “gussied up” all
year.
Tomorrow at 2:00pm our Principal is treating the faculty and
staff to a Mexi-Feast buffet catered by a popular local Mexican Restaurant. It
is a celebration of sorts. We will be celebrating the conclusion of another
successful school year.
Before that, though, we still have to get through today. And
today, as I said earlier, is going to be a hot one, indoors and out.
As Always, I Remain,
The Exhausted Educator
